Monthly replacement lenses are an excellent alternative to daily or weekly replacement lenses as they are the most cost efficient of the three. Monthly lenses can be worn for up to four weeks maximum but it should be borne in mind that some wearers cannot wear them for that long but instead less time, due to the variance in protein build-up from patient to patient.Many monthly replacement lenses such as Air Optix Aqua are notable for their use of silicone hydrogel technology. As silicon is oxygen permeable, lower water content lenses are possible allowing a longer, more comfortable lens wear time. This results in healthier eyes that look whiter and clearer. Silicone hydrogel lenses are becoming more popular as contact lens wearers are becoming more aware of the benefits compared to older, standard polymer hydrogel contact lenses.
Silicone hydrogel technology has also contributed to continuous wear lenses, enabling the wearing of lenses for a whole month non-stop, meaning the wearer can even sleep in the lens.
PureVision and Air Optix Night & Day Aqua are currently the most popular brands of continuous wear lenses. Not all patients can wear lenses continuously therefore consultation with an optician prior to purchasing is highly advisable.
